I myself, in my opinion, feel that self-esteem is important in all aspects of life. You could be down on your luck, but still hold your head up high and have plenty of self-esteem and people will recognize this.

Have a lovely rest of the day.

Yes, it is important but it is also overrated in some quarters. Some people just need to be a bit more humble. This should make them see that they are not the superior performers they think they are. The sense of humility can increase the drive to improve, as much as low esteem for self can diminish drive.

Self esteem is paramount to achieving success in life.

However, one must earn that esteem through hard work, diligence and meritorious achievement, not through unworthy praise which is dished out to everyone no matter the level of competence.

Saying it does not make it so.

Yes.

(1) First of all, having confidence and respect for yourself helps you to focus so you can be more effective in whatever you do. If you carry negative doubts or perceptions, thoughts or feelings, especially fears from the past or anxieties about the future, these can block your mind from thinking clearly in planning and making the best decisions

(2) Secondly, people respect you more if you respect yourself. When you look down on yourself, focus on your faults, or hide behind your fears, often this negative self-image generates negative feelings or energy that merely attract more of the same. Especially in an environment that runs on pack mentality or pecking order, people often pick on easy targets to single out for harassment, rejection or ridicule. So self-respect and self-confidence are important in gaining mutual support from others, instead of obstacles, in order to succeed in life.

(3) Thirdly, these two factors are related. How you perceive yourself and others tends to reflect either the same positive outlook or the same negative bias.

(a) Positive influence
People who are truly confident and self-respecting tend to show equal and utmost respect for each person and make everyone feel just as important. So true self-confidence inspires the same in others around you.

By building one's own esteem and confidence, and that of others at the same time, everyone can achieve greater potential and success.

(b) Negative influence
People very commonly project their own faults onto others, thus creating mutual misery. While constructive criticism is helpful in improving oneself and one's relationships, projecting a negative self-image onto others destroys relationships and perpetuates mutual conflict and blame. This kind of division prevents people from developing more effective and successful relationships as needed for maximum cooperation and teamwork.

I find the common cause is lack of faith that people or situations can improve, and thus this low esteem leads to self-defeat.
