You can NAME a star though some bogus organization called the International Star Registry that always advertised on radio about this time of year, and others, but you can hardly own it in any sense. First the beings who live there might have a quarrel with you about that, and second there is no way you could ever hope to even see any light that came from a star at the time you bought it.

You can't "buy" a star. You can, however, pay various organizations to NAME stars after you, although nobody uses the names. They're simply filed in the library of Congress. Astronomers still use the numeric designation that are made when they come up with them.

Enforcing your "property rights" on a star would be impossible as well.

First off, you don't buy the star, you name it. Second, it will most likely be a star that you can't see with your bare eyes, most of those were named years ago. Thirdly, the place to buy the naming rights is the National Star Registry.

You cannot buy a star. If you "buy" a star, all you're paying for is the certificate that you "own" it and where to find it in the sky. Star Registry is one of the companies offering this service.

It would be cheaper to pick a star out of the sky, plot it's placement and make up a certificate of "ownership" yourself since it would have just as much worth.

its a scam.

basically, you paying to 'name' a star.

but - you're not actually naming a star. All visible stars already have names, given to them by astronomers. What these companies do is re-name stars, then publish it as a book, which no one ever uses. Thats why they say its "registered with the US Copyright Office" - it just means they copyrighted the book they published.

Just pick one and take it. Nobody can defend it at that range.... hell, it would take years just for the signal to get there. Just take one. Probably nobody will notice for quite some time. I do it all the time... here, have the end of the Big Dipper.... I've been squatting on it for months but I'm done with it.
