It is a Hitchcock Presents called Man from the South made in 1960. Steve Mcqueen was the other actor. Hope this helps.

Don't know but I'll watch the response with interest.
Reason being is that in the film Four Rooms, where there are 4 different stories set in a hotel on new years eve (stars Tim Roth as the bell boy linking all 4 stories - all 4 stories are directed by different directors), the last story is written and directed by Tarantino and involves a similar scene. When I watched it I thought I was sure I'd seen something like it before and your question has just hit the nail on the head so thank you.
Hang on, was it not one of the Tales of the Unexpected??

This was one of Roald Dhals (probably Spelt wrong) Tales of the unexpected. She came in at the end and said he had nothing to gamble with as it was all hers as she handed back the Zippo with only a finger and thumb left on her hand

Roald Dahl, I think - a short story. It has been made into something for the screen, but I've never seen it.
A great premise for a story!
