I am getting into the wargames genre or boardgames and am trying to decide between these two games. They are both about the same price, but which is more fun and has more replay value?

With the caveat that I've not played C&C: Ancients...

Both have a set number of scenarios, with Mem '44 having a couple more scenarios in the base set than C&C. C&C has two expansions, both with around 20 new scenarios. Mem '44 has 4 expansions/terrain packs and rules for your own scenarios, but not as many premades. Advantage - Push

Mem '44 is stock with miniatures for the game, C&C uses colored blocks and stickers to indicate units. C&C can be adapted to miniatures, but you'd need your own. Advantage - Mem '44

C&C appears to be a little more rules intensive than Mem '44. Even my wife, with no interest in wargames, found Mem '44 relatively enjoyable and easy to pick up. Advantage - Depends on what you're looking for.

Both games are rated almost identically on BoardgameGeek. Advantage - Push.

So it seems if you want a slightly easier game to teach/learn and you want the miniatures, go with Mem '44. If you're ok with abstracted units and want a little more "meat" to your game rules, go with C&C.

It all depends what you like. They have same (very similar) mechanics. Memoir '44 (WWII) is lighter from what I heard. I have CC: Ancients and enjoy it very much. I get a feeling that locally here that more "wargame" type of people prefer CC.

Memoir has lots more expansion and I could see it attracting more opponents or players. I'm still waiting for the first expansion for CC to get to my FLGS.

You might want to look into Battlelore (Fantasy) to this list also. Personally, I have no interest it in it but it might interest you. Same type of mechanics, again I don't want three same type of games. We all have limited storage space.

I will say this, since you getting into the genre buy what your friends might be interested in playing. I learn this the hard way. :(
