If your into serial killers, these might be good choices- Albert Fish. Or Ted Bundy. Or Richard Chase. Or Jefferey Dahmer. Or John Wayne Gacy. Or Betty Neumar. Or maybe you could go historical- Billy the kid. Or Kaiser Wilhelm. Or John Wilkes Booth. Or Sir John Franklin. Very interesting people to write about =)

Write a biography on one of your grandparents. The best stories are very often about the lives of "normal" non-famous people. You will learn a lot about your grandparent and their life before you or your parents were born, and I'm sure that your family members will really enjoy talking to you and helping you with your research.

Why not select someone you know? A grandparent or neighbor who has lived a long life. As them to tell you about the times they lived in.
You would be able to interview them personally and not just get information off the internet, much more impressive to your teacher.

Ernest Shackleton. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shackleton). He was an antarctic explorer trying to be the first person to walk across Antarctica in 1912 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Trans-Antarctic_Expedition). Their ship was trapped in ice and then crushed, and he and his men had to abandon it with little food and clothing and no hope of rescue or escape. They took a rowboat and rigged up a sail and a cover, and Shackleton and a few of his men sailed across the Drake Passage (known for being rough seas) in bad weather to South Georgia Island to get help for the rest of the men, who were trapped on a small island.
He was a fascinating character, and there are lots of books and articles about him. There are also several movies, such as http://www.amazon.com/Endurance-Shackletons-Legendary-Antarctic-Expedition/dp/B0000A7W16/sr=1-1/qid=1165959094/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-5811695-0577746?ie=UTF8&s=dvd and http://www.amazon.com/Shackleton-Greatest-Survival-3-Disc-Collectors/dp/B000063TON/ref=pd_bxgy_d_text_b/102-5811695-0577746
