Your cervix is the opening to your uterus. Usually it is closed tight. When you are pregnant it is closed tight also. To deliver a baby, the opening( your cervix) must dialate( get bigger). It is considered a "0" when completely closed and must dialate to a "10". This has to happen so that the baby can pass from the uterus into the vagina and out into the world. HTH

When the baby's head starts to push out through the cervix it expands. when they say the baby is so many CM dialated it means that the opening of the cervix is stretched to that many CM around because the babys head is pushing on through it.

i really hope this is just a general question and you aren't already pregnant...

dialating is when your cervix actually begins to open. you need to be dialated 10 cm in order for baby to be able to pass thru the birth canal.

During labour, as the baby's head begins to push down on the cervex, the hole in the middle begins to expand to allow the baby to pass through it. That's what dilation is. 10 cm is considered fully dilated, that's when you can start pushing. If you push before then you risk damaging the cervex. The midwife will check by measuring it with her fingers. Generally your body tells you to push and trust me, when they say urge they mean it. If you are not fully dilated the midwife will tell you not to push which is hard. It's best to practice deep breathing exercises before hand in the event this happens.

Your cervix goes from being closed tightly to opening to 10 cm to allow the baby to pass through. It also effaces, which is getting shorter (think scrunching up of a turtle neck).

You can start both of these before labor and never know it is happening or it can happen during labor and contractions.

Dilation is when your cervix (the bottom of your uterus) is opening in preparation for the birth of a baby. When you are 'fully dilated' the cervix should be about 10 cm.

First of all when you are having a baby the baby preses its head through the vagina to open it up. When the cervix fully open that is what dilated means.
