I play guitar and write my own songs too, but you don't see me rocking in front of millions.
The best way to get a big-time singing career is to lose 50-90 pounds, dye your hair, and sing what they write for you. You have to have lots of money and lots of time and preferably live in LA where a million others are going to make it too. The more work you put into your body and less work you put into your actual music, the better off you are.
OR
You can be realistic and realize that you're NOT going to be famous. If you want a REAL career in music, you're not going to make millions. You should have a goal to be able to make a secure living off of your music. That doesn't mean playing in crowded arenas, but maybe other things. Think jingles, music production, music teacher, etc...
Use your musical talent for a real job. You can go to college and study music so you have a degree to fall back on if the big-time doesn't work out. It's okay to dream, but I know so many people who let a dream run their lives and they get nowhere but broke. If you do that, you'll end up playing in bars in small towns here and there, and you'll still have to be a waitress to actually get by.
Good Luck.

This is my second similar post in the past 15 minutes...hmmm...lot of new talent on the scene? I hope so!

OK...get ready you have a lot of work to do. First, record a demo with about 5 songs on it. Sell it on CD Baby, Amazon. Book as many gigs as you can and sell your CD's there too.

When you get to a good number, approach the record companies. They like sure bets...and if you show up saying I sold 10,000 CD's myself, they'll sit up and take interest.

Neil Peart said it takes ten years to become an overnight success...and trust me, it is the truth.

American Idol ?

Seriously, I can suggest some things:

1. Move to one of the following cities; New York, Hollywood, Nashville, or London.

2. Get involved in a songwriter's association or group.

3. Educate yourself on the business end of the music industry (Liscensing, Copywrighting, Contracts, Marketing, Royalties, Etc.)

4. Record yourself performing, and have it available at any time.

5. Play as many gigs as you can.

6. Network with anyone and everyone (Business cards with your Name, Phone #, and Myspace URL).

7. Register with the Musician's Union in the City where you live

8. Go to other performances to be seen, and to meet other musicians and music fans.

9. Create a database of your fans, and keep in contact with them regularly.

10. Work for a record company, even if it is as an administrative assistant, or a seceratary, or work at a recording studio.

11. Don't rely on your music career to be the main source of your income at first, you may experience years of struggling.

have good connections and a nice body cause in the industry known for the "casting couch" you will need it more than actual talent, take Britney spears for example.
