If your grandmother's grandfather's grandmother was Cherokee, is that enough for a person to say they are part Native American/Cherokee?

Why exclude this part of your heritage? I'm an American mutt and embrace all my "parts". I don't need anyone to validate it for me and neither should you. But if you are looking for Tribal recognition the Eastern and Western Cherokee Nations each have different criteria for being accepted as a (literally) card carrying Cherokee. It's pretty racist and dehumanizing that Native Americans are the only ethnic group that have to legally prove who they are but in some ways it is a survival mechanism.

Of course you can say you are descendant of a Cherokee. If someone was of royal bloodline, I'm sure they would be quick to mention it, even if it were further away then yours. You should take the opportunity to learn more about the Cherokees and understand more about where "some" of your family came from.

No not really. It's a old Cherokee joke that every white man is related to a Cherokee Princess. It may not even be true but a lot of people say it. It's even been said in my family.

I would just say that some of my ancestors were Cherokee.
Basically, you would be 1/128th Cherokee, so that figures out to less than 8/10th's of 1%. Hardly worth mentioning.

IMO, the DNA is part of what makes you you. If you took it out, you wouldn't be you any more.

I wouldn't go trying to be or claiming more then you should, out of respect of the cultures and people who actually grew up in it and know their culture. But I see no problem with saying you are part Native along with everything else that you are made up of.

No. If you cannot claim more than 1/4th of an ethnicity, there is no point in mentioning it. It just makes you look sad and pathetic, trying to find something "special" about yourself.

You have to check the Dawes Commission to see if they Registered. If not, then no college fund. You have to prove it.
