I feel your pain. I was born in August and I hate peridots (such a sickly shade of light green--May would have been a better month for me because I love emeralds). Luckily, I tend to go by signs of the zodiac rather than the month. Since I'm a Leo, I have my pick of carnelian, sardonyx, peridot, yellow sapphire, diamond and amber. I often choose amber. But, when that's not an option, I just pick whatever stone I like best. (My class ring has an emerald on it. When people ask me if I was born in May or if I'm a Taurus, I say, "No. Leo, August. I just like this color.")
Now, as for the topaz...the cool thing about the topaz is that it doesn't have to be yellow. It can also be light blue. If you are a Scorpio, your birthstone choices can extend to alexandrite, bloodstone, onyx and garnet. (Since Scorpio's colors are black and dark red.) If you are a Sagittarius, your choices could be lapis lazuli, turquoise or red tourmaline.
If you don't like any of these, then you can just choose whatever stone has your favorite color. I'm of the opinion that these things should never be written in stone. (Pun intended.)

There are different colors of topaz... so I assume you mean yellow topaz? Well, if you hate the color so much, just don't wear it! There are other things that can signify your birth month- like flowers, for example.

Try a blue topaz. They come in varying shades of blue called :
Swiss Blue
London Blue
Sky Blue and shades inbetween.
