Well I am a sign language interpreter and learning the language is in no way easy. It is complicated and requires a great knowledge of linguistic, syntactics and communication. But if you are leaning it so you can communicate with a friend i would try going to the library. there are some excellent books out there. like "the joy of signing" it will teach you the alphabet, numbers and about 200 basic words and phases. your public library should have it or they will inter-library loan it for you. all you have to do is ask. good luck, but remember nothing is as good as learning from an actually deaf person.

You can probably find the American Sign Language alphabet online. You will also be able to learn common signs. Probably the best way to learn it is by enrolling in a class. There are also books in the library that can help you.

I would start with the alphabet and numbers on simple charts. It's a great start because then you can spell anything.
