Cleopatra had 4 children, 1 allegedly by Julius Caesar and 3 by Mark Anthony. Caesarian, her child with Caesar, was put to death presumably as he was seen as a threat to Octavian's (later the Emperor Augustus) position. Anthony's children were brought back to Rome and raised by Octavia Anthony's estranged wife. Her daugher Cleopatra Selene married King Juba II of Mauretania and had two children Ptolemy and Drusilla. Nothing is known about the fate of her other two sons.

In all, Cleopatra had four children, one by Caesar (Caesarion) and three by Antony (Cleopatra Selene, Alexander Helios, Ptolemy Philadelphus). Cleopatra's son by Caesar, Caesarion, was proclaimed pharaoh by Egyptians, but Octavian had already won. Caesarion was captured and executed, his fate reportedly sealed by Octavian's famous phrase: "Too many Caesars". Thus ended not just the Hellenistic line of Egyptian pharaohs, but the line of all Egyptian pharaohs. The three children of Cleopatra with Antony were spared and taken back to Rome where they were reared by Antony's wife, Octavia.

Cleopatra was the last pharaoh; after her death Egypt became a Roman province. Because Caesarion was Julius Caesar's son and might pose a threat to Octavian's power, Octavian had the boy strangled by his tutor.

The son of Cleopatra (VII) with Julius Caesar was Caesarian. He was killed by Caesar's nephew and adopted son Octavius in 30 b.c. following the defeat and deaths of Marc Antony and Cleopatra.
