I have used the free version of Limewire now for over a year. It has not slowed down my pc a bit. I am running a gig and a half of RAM and a 250 GB hdd. Your RAM and HDD are 2 different things. So from what you said, you have 256 MB of RAM(Random Access Memory) and you haven't specified how much HDD space you have.
You should definitely grab a 256 MB stick of extra memory for your pc. They are fairly cheap. Check out www.tigerdirect.com You'll notice a nice little boost.
And yes, the more information you have stored on your HDD the slower it will run. It takes it longer to search for the information. A few things to help this out; defrag your computer, update your pagefile size, windows does not have a program to defragment your pagefile so just first remove it to clear it and then reinstate it to have it grouped closer together. Update your prefetch (google this to learn how) it helps programs start faster by placing frequently used programs on the outer edge of the platter. Run virus and spyware scans. I use Adaware SE Personal, Spybot search and destroy, ewido antispyware and Kaspersky antivirus and firewall. I have had not trouble at all with spyware or viruses over the last year with this setup.
If you had the funds available, just think of maybe getting an external HDD for all you music or movies (the files over 50MB's). This will also help clear up your HDD and make things run a lot quicker. Just remember the more you have on your HDD, the slower it will work. It's just the way it is. But try at least a few of these things and I guarantee you'll be sailing along in no time!

If you are downloading P2P, I would scan for a virus or spyware. Spyware will slow it down.
All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.
AVG Removes I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

256MB of RAM is not a lot...I suggest upgrading to 512MB. Also, check your hard drive free space, if it's low it will really slow down your computer. Limewire might slow down your Internet connection because of people downloading from you...be sure to put a bandwidth throttle on Limewire.

Yep, from experience I have found Limewire slows computers down. Or you could have just contracted viruses of Limewire which is very easy and can certainly slow down your computer.

any sharing files such as limewire, kazaa, ares, etc. slow down your computer when open. but there are other factors to consider: when did you last wipe your hard drive? have you cleaned out your temp internet files? a good way to clean up your comptuer is open My Computer, then right click on C: drive, then click properties. You can then view how much memory is taken up on your overall hard drive (the more memory used up, the slower it will run) Then click on Disk Cleanup. choose all 'tempoary files' but don't compress your harddisk (it makes it harder to read)click to perform these actions, and it should free up a bit of space on your hard drive.

Various factors slow your PC down. The things that are downloaded, updates, spyware and cookies, new progs, etc.
The best way is when it really becomes impossible to use is to start afresh.
Try using CCleaner to clear out. Remove unused programs and clean the registry and start up list
