the prologue is what comes before the 1st chapter. the exposition is where the author introduces the setting, char., and the very start of what the conflict may be.

The prologue is before the first chapter, the exposition comes from the first chapter and can go on several chapters. It sets the scene, the characters and time period it also introduces the conflict which may take more than one chapter (Once upon a time etc.) The rising action is all the plot action that leads to the climax, or the point where the conflict is resolved. The falling action is what happens after and the resolution is the long term effect. (They lived happily ever after)
