It means to view the folder as a little picture or preview of whats inside. More clear than an icon. Try it.

thumbnails are smaller versions of picture files. Usually if you click on a thumbnail it will bring up a larger version of that specific picture. these are used to display several pictures on one page without adding to the load time much.
