I don't know what year the book I'm reading takes place in, but these are some things i do know:

it takes place in the 1800's
Wyoming is still a wilderness but people are begining to live there
Wyoming isn't an official state yet
Johnson is president
there are trains
people were begining to find gold
the main character went on a cattle drive to Oregon

Any idea around what year my book takes place in?

Johnson was President from April, 1865 to March, 1869. Wyoming wasn't a state then. The railway was already built thru Wyoming then. Sorry, can't be narrowed down any more than that with the information given.

Andrew Johnson was president from the assassination of Lincoln in spring 1865 until the next president was inaugurated in March 1869. n those days, slow communications made it obvious to leave a lot of time between the election of 1868 and the inauguration.

Wyoming statehood did not come until 1890, but Wyoming was made a territory in summer 1868.
