12 y/o girls are into their friends so go for things that help them feel connected yet let them explore their own individuality they're starting to develop like a diary, clothes, special jewelry (it doesn't take much for them to feel you spent a bunch of money - Walmart has great jewelry, great quality - they buy from the same companies that sell to Zales), make-up, A MAKE-OVER, small mp3 players, child-oriented cell phone (they make them specifically for children where they limited numbers, no games, etc), magazine subscriptions - my daughter's FAVORITE and Soooo cheap.
14 y/o boys are sports minded usually. Go for sports gear, toys, accessories, jerseys with favorite team and player, signed footballs, etc. sports magazines (Sports Illustrated for kids)
For either of them, if they're yours or in your family, consider starting a collection for them: dolls, annual coin sets, animal trinkets, sports memorabillia.
ALSO, go to the bank and purchase $25+ in savings bonds for the future - because you believe in them and their future enough to start investing now.
You'd be suprised how fascinated kids of these ages are with science things like telescopes - things that pique their interest in their surroundings. Help them do that.
