He's into Transformers, JLA and X-Men, so I was thinking of something that incorporates a simple logo. It has to be small, though, so I can get it done before xmas and without him seeing it.

He's not into hats or scarves, so those are out. Let me know if this is good: a tote bag with a logo for his tabletop RPG books? Does anybody know of a pattern for a really sturdy tote bag (one good enough for text books)?

Crochet yarn will stretch to it limits if you make him something to carry his books. Truly about the only thing you could make him in this short amount of time is a long scarf. You say he doesn't like them. Could you think that because you've never seen him with one? He might love one that you made him.

ok, that person is an asshole. crocheted gifts are sweet! my grandma made me personalize pillow cases and a blanket to match and I love it so much!!
so try a blanket and pillow case to match or something....

making it personal is always a great idea!
