There is going to be a need for more NHS money when it becomes a law to stop smoking in public places, there are going to be so many bad tempered people about fighting for the right to smoke in pubs , what with the likes of me having a laugh that at last the government as the moral standing to believe what Scientist have known for years , but the governments of this country ignored, Any way Gordon will come up with something, taxed to breathe I think.

I won`t have any choice will I? Smokers should be charged a tax when they get any NHS treatment. and our friend who just earlier remarked that cigarettes should cost £10+ a packet is right. It is time the filthy things were eradicated, there is not one good point to be made for smoking. The government will still get its` taxes, there are still enough imbeciles left paying tax on cigarettes, plus the government has hinted it will tax over the counter vitamins and `health` shop goods. Brown already has worked things out for the April budget, heaven help us then!

Aw *** On ! You are not stupid enough to believe the weirdo scaremongers rhetoric are you. The NHS doesn't specifically get any revenue from smokers. All the revenue from all the taxes goes into a big pot and the government dishes it out depending on the political pressure of the moment. You will be telling me that you believe all the car tax money goes to build roads next.

The question's based on a false premise: Cigarette users COST the NHS more than they pay in tax, sorry !

Tax from cigs is over 6 billion a year ,the NHS only needs one and a half billion,so you wont need to,unless of course everyone gives up smoking.

It makes a mockery of saying smokers shouldnt get treated on the NHS considering its them that are keeping it going for the rest of the population that penalise smokers.

no, i should get a tax rebate now, for not destroying my body now and costing the NHS later.

They should make them cost £10-20 per pack, price them out of the market of the unemployed ( who dont fund the NHS) and children, use the money to clamp down on imports, to prevent people getting them elsewhere.

They KILL you, it's a FACT, so why tolerate them. Regardless of where the funds come from, you are doing people and there families a favour by preventing them from smoking.

i presume a few chain smoking, sit at home, unemployed people won't like this.

perhaps if the government totally banned cigarettes from being sold or imported into this country it would make it easier for people to kick the habit.

No! But I would be prepared to let people with smoking related illness die. Then more tax would not be required.

Actually, this is a little unfair. People with smoking related illness should be charged for NHS service. That would be fair and they would die slower.
