Basically diesel is "heavy oil"and burn`s differently than petrol ( petrol evaporate`s very quickly )
Heavy smoking is normally only visible in older diesel motor car`s / van`s ( after a while people tend not to have them serviced regular and that give`s wear on the injector`s and fuel pump ) Mixing in a fuel additive help`s to ease the smoking but will not cure it !

How old is your van ? if your van passed a mot it smokes within legal limits .
diesels can appear to smoke a lot if you are driving in the dark and look in your wing mirror the smoke is highlighted by lights behind you .
vans are also driven hard and will smoke when they reach full revs. or there abouts
The smoke is often not smoke but particles leftover from combustion [ soot ] and on most turbo diesel engines only gets blown out when it gets full boost over taking etc.

Elderly clapped out vans which are poorly maintained owned by blokes who have a friend to give them an MOT.
Often the 'smoke' is volatilised fuel which has not been burnt because the cylinders/valves are dodgy. It stinks much like paraffin.
How about the police checking a few for emissions level? OK I know the answer to that one!

diesel fuel is less refined and therefore burns richer than gasoline cars. you will usually only see black smoke coming out of a diesel if it is an older truck or the driver is pushing it hard. newer diesels make much less noise (excluding ford powerstroke) and throw out less soot. the new VW tdi is just as quiet as their gasoline engines, the same with dodge's cummins.
