You will have to download software for what I will reccommend, but no installation required

Audacity (Portable) has this facility.

www.portableapps.com - it is in there, extract it into a folder or pen disk, and run.

If all you want to do is play back a stereo file and send it to a mono output, you can buy a stereo-to-mono adapter cable at any electronics store that will allow your computer to play the streo file but have the two channels sent to a mono output device, like an amplifier or mixer.

If however you want to create a mono file on your computer, you'll need software. I've tried to do this with Windows Movie Maker with no success. Audacity did it in 3 clicks.

This is a problem that could be solved with software, possibly, but is easily solved with a little hardware, as you've already figured out... You need to make that Radio Shack trip I'm afraid. You can get a "Splitter" that will take your white cord (mono audio) in one end, and have two connections for a new stereo cord (usually red and white) to come out the other end. It will still be mono, and you can't do anything about that, but you'll hear it from both left and right speakers. You're looking at $5-$10 for the splitter and an additional pair of RCA cables (the red and white one). Good luck!

You could just record it from one device into another using a single cable, eg. the output of 1 computer into the mono-input of another.
