A few people are saying that Christmas was originally a pagan holiday, which isn't *necessarily* true. Here's what happened.
The birth of Jesus was originally celebrated in the springtime, around when the birth of Jesus actually occured. During the same era, there was a pagan holiday that was celebrated in the end of December. That holiday was NOT Christmas. It was just a pagan holiday.
The Christians proceeded to go through small towns and convert the pagans to Christianity. And as you all know, it's VERY hard--sometimes impossible--to sway people from their beliefs. One of the ways that they used to persuade them was to tell them at the birth of Jesus took place in the end of December. That was kind of a way of saying, "Look at that! You guys already celebrate then! Just celebrate something different instead!"
So the celebration of Christ's birth was moved to December (even though the DATE of his birth is in the springtime) as a way of converting pagans to Christianity. It is NOT a pagan holiday, it's a holiday that was moved to a different time of the year to CONVERT pagans.
The birth of Christ is celebrated as "Christmas". That is the reason for Christmas. Whatever you call it, December 25th is--although the incorrect date--the celebration of the birth of Christ.
The idea of presents and gift-giving came from the fact that the wisemen brought presents to the baby Jesus, but it got blown COMPLETELY out of proportion and turned into the wild, store mobbing, attacking people and spending unthinkable amounts of money on material things. Non-Christians now "celebrate" Christmas with the tree and presents and such.
In a sense, there are two Christmases. Figuratively speaking, of course. The first is the "true" Christmas, the celebration of the birth of Christ, celebrated by Christians. The second of the secular Christmas, which is where Santa Claus and presents are celebrated by Christians and non-Christians alike.
Now breaking from the facts and going into my own opinion, I still think Christmas should be celebrated for the true meaning. Gifts are great sometimes, but it's not why Christmas should be celebrated, in my opinion.
I know that was a lot, but I hope it was worth something, lol. :)

Christmas should be about Christ and celebrating his birth. Also time to spend with your family and friends. All stores should be closed for those two days. So everyone can enjoy and celebrate the holiday. What happened to the home made gifts. The gifts from the heart.

Research the Winter Solstice as that is where Christmas came from. Christmas is whatever you make it out to be. Some people are materialistic and others aren't.
Christ originally had nothing to do with the holiday for two reasons: in the Bible, he wanted people to remember his death. Celebrating births was something only Pagans did, not the Jews or even the early Christians. The other reason is that Christmas originated (after being banned for many years as it was a Pagan practice) as a way for the Christian church to force the Pagans to convert to their belief system. They refused to coexist in peace with them otherwise. Later, during Puritan times, Christmas was banned again as it was believed to be Pagan and not Christ-related at all.

Christmas was never about Christ, was celebrated before christ was born.
It is pagan origin.
Look before Jesus was born; Jeremiah writes about christmas trees:
Jeremiah 10:3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the ax.
Jeremiah 10:4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
Jeremiah 10:5 They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.
for as making merry, yet future, praise for killing God's prophets:
Revelation 11:10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.

From the name, it connotes is a celebration related to Christ, and the only Christ known is Jesus. To the Christians, christmas is the period set aside to celebrate, the coming, that is, the birth of Jesus Christ our Saviour and Redeemer, who was celebrated by the angels and the wise men. The major lesson God has taught us by Christ coming to this world is sacrificial love, by given us the most important gift. We can also celebrate christmas by showing love to one another, through giving of gifts.

It depends. It can be both a secular or religious holiday. CHRISTmas was what it was probably meant to be. But even before the day of Christ, other civiliazations were celebrating in some form of Christmas. Eventually, the term Christmas, became traced to the birth of Christ.

At Christmas we celebrate Gods son, Jesus Christs Birthday!! It is supposedly in April, but we celebrate it early. We celebrate by putting up a tree, opening gifts, eating good food, and being with family!

Originally it was a pagan holiday that Christians felt should well be Christianized. If you believe that Christ was born on the 25th of December then you should celebrate it as a religious holiday. If you don't believe Christ was born on that day then do with it what you want.

Christmas is a man made holday. It's another excuse for people to congregate and get drunk. The Bible says nothing about Christmas. Jesus was not even born 12-25. Some say October and others say January. The whole thing is a sham!
