Consult the manufacturer's installation instructions (the manual that your stove came with) to find out.
The Barometric dampers stabilize flue draft by drawing air into the flue. Why do this? too much draft causes erratic burning and wasted fuel. A stable draft provides stable heat and efficient fuel consumption. In other words, the wood would be burned more efficiently.
Why is it better than a manual one? It operates automatically. A flap swings open wider as draft increases, thereby letting in more air. And as draft reduces, The flap closes to reduce air.

I live with wood heat as my primary.

If you set the damper and learn your stoves "personality" you are more safe. Your interaction with it gives you the time to notice things you might not see.

Safety first!
