Here is an article I found that seems to work wonders...or it did for me. This is not to say that it will work for a baby this young, but hey...ya never know! Maybe you can print this off for you friend to read and she can try it. I'll tell you that the first night is HARD, but it gets easier. Trust me. Much easier!
I would type it out, but it's put much better in the article. I hope this helps!!

She has got to let her cry... I did it with both my sons at 2 months. She needs to go about her daily life (noise and all) otherwise if she makes it too quiet the baby will get use to that. Seriously, I had to make that decision for my sanity sake... it broke my heart the first night, the second my boys didn't cry as much and it made me feel a little better... by the second night they know your not gonna come in there anymore. By the 3rd night a little fuss but that was it. Tell your friend the longer she waits to get her baby on a routine the more she will regret it because she is programming her childs response. You should have saw super nanny last night.

When our son was about that age, we let him sleep in the car seat, and had to rock or swing that to get him to sleep - make sure to strap them in as normal.. We also played a sound machine. Also try a nuk, now they're recommended for SIDs prevention too.

Make sure she's not hungry, wet, or has gas. (If she has gas, you can give her meds or bend her knees and push up gently -- like swatting to help.) If every logical need is meet, I would say leave her alone in her crib for a while and see if she won't simply cry herself to sleep. It could be that she doesn't want to "miss" anything and won't sleep while she thinks something interesting is happening.

it sounds like she might have a belly ache.maybe the formula that the baby is on is not agreeing with her.i had the same problem with my daughter and they had to change her formula.certain formulas is harder for a baby to break down.i would talk to the doctor about switching.hope this helps.

That may not be the problem. My daughter was the same and it ended up she wasn't getting enough milk. She was still gaining a suffucent amount of weight but she was hungry.

Has she attemped to swaddle her like they did in the hospital? That is the only way I can get my son to sleep sometimes. It makes them feel secure, like when they were in the womb. I hope this helps some.

You can try letting her lay on her stomach on the mothers chest and rub her back gently. The baby probably wants to be close to you.
