Best bait I have used without a doubt is nightcrawlers. Chicken liver comes in a distant second but is number 1 for set lines.

Liver and dough mixed with Big Red work pretty good. Catfish can be fun to catch. I take my kids sometimes and they don't have the patience needed for real fishing.
DON'T EAT THE CATFISH!!!!
We go to the power plant lakes. They stock the lakes with catfish whenever the water gets polluted. God made catfish as a water filtering system. They absorb the toxins out of the water as it passes through their gills.

Try something smelly...like poo. I'm not kidding, I got some catfish bait one time, and it stunk so bad I refused to fish!

greasy popcorn, the imitation butter flavor kind
just toss it on the water, the catfish will come up to eat in droves
you can hit em with a whiffle bat and scoop them up with a net

i use doughball i make and douse them with a lot of garlic. if the fish are there and even a little hungry they will bite. catfish are normally bottom feeders and use their sense of fell and smell to find food. the barbels and whiskers are very sensitive
