Good knives should NEVER be placed in a dishwasher. All of the soaps, liquid or powder, and especially the tablets, are extremely caustic. The knives will dull and the handles will eventually be ruined. Knives should always be handwashed and then dried.

Other things that should never go in the dishwasher include aluminum, which discolors terribly. Many ceramics and most glassware will become permanently etched. The one thing we all put in that we shouldn't are the place knives from our stainless flatware. The instructions that come with almost every set on the market say that the knives are NOT dishwasher safe. Take a good look at yours. I'm sure you'll find they are pitted. That's from the dishwasher detergent.

Since the caustic soap only renders some of these items ugly we have to pick and choose what we're willing to accept.

A dishwashing machine can dull anything and everything. It all depends on the soap you use. If you use a powder, you are guaranteed that sooner or later, everything will dull or scratch. You should use a liquid dishwasher soap to avoid this.
