I guess it really depends what is causing the smell. There are some causes that need to be removed before the smell will go away.... such as mold and moisture.

If however, this is not the cause, the best way to remove a musty smell in a home is to open ALL of the windows for 10 minutes every day until the smell is gone. If you decide to just use air freshener or essential oil, it will only cover up the smell, not remove it. The best air freshener is FRESH AIR

Open your windows and let the house air out. Place charcoal under neath furniture, such as couches, chairs etc...This will help take the moisture out of the air that causes the musky smell.

Open the windows to get some fresh air in.
Saturate cotton balls with Vanilla Extract and place in inconspicuous areas thru out your home. The vanilla will absorb the odors and it smells great too.
