My landlord has allowed me to access his mac wireless network. My pc picked up his system, which is "open" and "wep", but it looks like it needs a network key.
He does not know where to find this information, where can I tell him to look (layman's terms please) and where do I put it on mine.

Whoever set up the router put in the WEP key. You can clear it by reseting the router to the default factory settings. Once you find the WEP key or clear it, you will be able to access it fine. When you connect to the router, it will ask you for the WEP key...just enter it and you are good to go. If you clear it, anyone can connect to it.

Well what device is he using for his Wireless Network? If he needs to get information about his network I will assume his on Mac the easiest way is to open Finder>Applications>Utilities>Terminal.app and then type in ifconfig and get his default gateway. Go into a Web Browser such as Firefox, Opera, Safari, Camino and go to that IP address usually something like 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 some go for 10.0.0.1 but that all depends on the device in question.

You can usually go to the devices website to get the manual to get the default password to login to the device and get the WEP key from that.

If he is using an Airport Express or Airport Base Station I have provided a link on how to reset those devices back to default. But to give you full detailed instruction I would need more details on how to walk you through configuration.

E-Mail if you need help. Hope this gets you in the right direction.

Cheers!
