My brother's dog is insane! Whenever it sees anyone it runs over and bites their leg so hard that there's bite-marks everywhere. Trust me, it did that to me twice.

The dog never ever shuts-up at night. It not only left us wide awake, but also our neighbors.

Should I put the dog to sleep? My brother said that he wont mind?

I'm thinking of buying another dog or another type of pet.

No, you shouldn't. Did your family want to murder you when you were a baby because you didn't shut up and puked all over the place? Call a shelter to consider behavior studies or training, be a human, not a monster.

Someone should try to get it some training or something before putting it down. If you try other options and all else fails, you still have the option of putting it to sleep. But, at least give him a chance.
You can try a muzzle or a shock collar for the barking. And there are ways to try to train it not to bite. A little time and training can go a long way. Dogs and puppies are like children. They aren't all perfect and some need more time and attention than others. Some need a little bit more work, but in the end, there's no really bad dogs — just bad owners. Give it a try. You might be surprised how nice he could be!

This dog is showing some severe behavioural problems. You need expert help, and fast. I suggest that you immediately contant your vet, ask for the number of a local dog behaviourist, and ask them to come and make a visit as soon as they can fit you in. It will cost you money, it will cost you time, and it will require effort and love. But with patience, generosity and care you can seriously sort this dog out. I could offer some advice on solving the barking and biting, but quite frankly I don't know what's causing it and without a cause I can't offer treatment advice. The only person who can give you sound advice is a specialist who has a chance to watch the dog and work out WHY he's acting this way. Your vet could probably help, but the dog behaviourist would e so much better.

Taking your dog to a shelter would probably only result in him being destroyed, as they don't have the resources to help animals with such difficulties.

Your brother got this dog, he messed up its life, now it's his time to stand up like a man and take responsibility for the life he rashly took on and screwed up. If he's too pathetic to do that, it falls on you and the rest of the family. Hard but true. Someone in this family agreed to look after this dog, so do it.

And please... PLEASE DO NOT GET ANOTHER ONE! It will end up exactly the same because there is no such thing as a bad dog, only a bad owner. And you lot are apparently the pits.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.Use a lead to train the dog.Give it a chance to learn.Watch the show called "The Dog Whisperer." He is truely amzing & has a training video.ALL dogs can be trained,,he deserves to live a happy life.He acts this way because he doesnt know what to do,,he thinks he is protecting you & your home. You must be consistent & work with him every day,,you will be amazed at what he can learn if you really try.He can also learn to get along with another dog.He probably would like a friend.Take the time,,please dont kill him. When dogs bark,,it is because they need something. All dogs really want is to be with you.Get a good relationship with the dog & he will listen.Give him a bed,,ball,,toys of his own,,a rawhide chewie.Teach him ,,say No,,in a direct manner & firm tone.Use words such as sit,,stay,,no,,good dog.Never hit a dog or they will loose trust in you.You may roll up a newspaper & hit your hand.Thats enough to get the message across.Be assertive & stern. He wants to learn. He just may end up being your best friend.Give him plenty of excersize outside to rid excitment.Do you have a fenced in yard? A doghouse with straw? A chain from a hardware store (they dont break) & a swivel clip on both ends so not to tangle.Good luck.

Without having alot of back ground information, I would recommend consulting with a trainer or a behaviorist. I'm just guessing, but it seems like this dog has been a throw away to both you and your brother. They can sense that and will act out to protect themselves. If his life with you started on bad terms (being given up/away) and you're not helping support his mental/emotional health, he may just need some training and time. You have not given enough concrete information from which to even guess why he bites, so I can't say if it's something that could be fixed or not. Both biting and barking are things that can be dealt with if they are done for "fixable" reasons, and I would recommend trying that before you give up on him. If you absolutely insist on getting rid of him. Take him to a shelter or a rescue. I have a feeling that with the right behavior and support, he may not be as bad as you think. Again, without seeing the dog, and watching his behavior though, no one on this forum is going to be able to advise you 100%. By taking him somewhere where someone could see him, and observe his behavior, you would be getting a better answer to your question.

I can't believe that your brother said he " won't mind" if his dog is put to sleep.

You need to find someone else like a shelter to take the dog and give him a chance at a better life with re-training.

Don't get another dog and repeat the same mistake. You will just be on here again asking the same question only thing different will be the title........ Should I put my brother's dog to sleep just like the last one?

* Note : If the animal is truly viscious and re-training doesn't help then and only then put it to sleep. I also believe in putting an animal to sleep when they have lost their good quality of life and it can't be regained. That is showing your responsibility is taken seriously.

The dog should only be put to sleep if it is a danger to other people. If not see if you can find another home for the dog. It sounds like it needs some training and attention. And if you are not willing to give your time to this dog. Why would you want to get another one?

The dog is out of control! Your brother don't care! Why do he have the dog at the first place. I think you better take the dog to dog home something like that... not put it to sleep you will never get over it if you do that.

Why don't you put it up for adoption? Obviously your brother nor your family is ready for the upkeep of having a pet dog. There are many people out there who would gladly take the time to train your "insane" dog to be a great dog.

All it needs is some love, some training, and some patience. If you can't give it that, give it to someone who can. It doesn't deserve to die beause you all can't give it the attention it desires.

If neither of you are attached to the dog then you should contact the humane society. If they can't help you maybe they can give you advice on where to go. Putting the dog to sleep isn't fair to the the dog. It obviously was never trained the right way.

Why don't you buy him a series of obedience classes for christmas first????

And don't put it to sleep if you just can't handle it ....give it to a shelter, it is probably your brothers poor training at fault not the dog...and you CAN teach old dogs new tricks.

AND if this is how the two of you deal with problematic pets....DONT GET ANOTHER ONE, unless you get like sea monkeys or something.
