Poncho Villa is this the one you are talking about???
Doroteo Arango Arámbula (June 5, 1878 – July 23, 1923) — better known as Francisco Villa or, in its diminutive form, Pancho Villa — was one of the foremost leaders and best known generals of the Mexican Revolution, between 1911 and 1920, and provisional governor of the Mexican state of Chihuahua in 1913 and 1914.[1] Villa mostly operated in the northern theatre of the war, centering on Chihuahua, in the north of Mexico. Villa is often referred to as El centauro del norte (The Centaur of the North), due to his celebrated cavalry attacks as a general. Numerous streets and neighborhoods in Mexico are named for Villa. In the United States, Villa is principally remembered for his 1916 raid on Columbus, New Mexico, that provoked the Punitive Expedition commanded by General John J. Pershing, although the raid itself was a fairly minor event in Villa's military campaign history.
Villa and Villa's ardent supporters, known as Villistas, employed tactics such as propaganda and firing squads against enemies, expropriated hacienda land for distribution to peasants and villista soldiers, and robbed trains and printed fiat money to finance Villa's cause. Villa's generalship was noted for its speed of movement of his forces by railroad, use of cavalry and artillery attacks, and recruitment of enlisted soldiers of enemy units he defeated. Many of Villa's tactics and strategies were adopted by later 20th century revolutionaries.
Villa's troops were collectively known as the División del norte (Division Of The North). His elite cavalry troops and bodyguards were known as Los dorados (The Golden Ones).
As one of the major (and most colorful) figures of the first successful popular revolution of the 20th century, Villa's notoriety attracted journalists, photographers, and military freebooters of both idealistic and opportunistic stripe, from far and wide.
Villa's revolutionary aims (other than military goals), unlike those of Emiliano Zapata's Plan de Ayala, were never clearly defined. Villa spoke vaguely of creating communal military colonies for his ex-soldiers, and he subscribed to Venustiano Carranza's Plan of Guadalupe.
Despite extensive research by Mexican and foreign scholars, many of the details of Villa's life are in dispute

A poncho is a simple garment designed to keep the body warm, or if made from an impermeable material, to keep dry during rain. It is essentially a single large sheet of fabric with an opening for the head and sometimes for the arms. Some ponchos, especially those made to ward off rain, also have hoods attached.
Alternative ponchos are now designed as fashion accessories; they are the same shape but of different material. They are designed to look fashionable and be loose and comfortable, rather than ward off cold and rain. These are often made out of wool or yarn, knitted or crocheted.
A recent article in the New York Times "Circuits" section, which recounts the author's quest to find a poncho for her daughter online, sums up the garment's appeal even among adult women, "[T]he poncho is popular simply because it's so easy to wear. It goes with everything. One size fits all. It's never too tight."

PONCHO is a Mexican word. There are several garments in Mexico which are draped like a traditional cloak.for example the ruana . (El Paso Saddle blanket company :acrylic ruana 20$USD)
However they open in different ways. The Poncho however does not have an open side. It just has a head hole and you drop it over the head. Other Central american groups also have PONCHO which go by other names regional . I have one woven in deep reds with rainbow colors in fine lines.very tight weave. It has fringe all around and the fringe is multicolored bands light green yellow pink red. It is quite heavy and definitely rain proof .you dont wear it -it wears you. The wool is goat hair and wool tightly twisted. It's a handsome garment.
In the 1960's mexican textiles began to decline. Before that Mexico produced a wide variety of fine textiles. white on white embroidery, crochet lace all done well. Mexican cottons are the best in the world.
The Poncho was hand woven and handspun with various designs depending on the location . Some are embroidered usualy with floral motifs. Men's ponchos are more Azteca with geometric greek key types of borders with light dark contrast being distinctive.Very macho.
In the 1960's hippies travelled freely in Mexico and brought back to the states all kinds of Mexican clothing which was worn to rags as it was always their favorite garment. The Mexicans started to mass produce ponchos and it became a fashion item. This happened in the mid to late 1960's. Then acrylic ponchos were made in factories and sold in places like Penny's. Women also knit and crochet many styles that were generally worn with denim levis and bell bottom pants. Often cowboys girlfriends would wear them with cowboy boots and a hat. You will still see western women at Rodeos wearing a poncho now and then. You will certainly see the PONCHO worn at fiesta in Sante Fe New Mexico(USA)There is New Mexico and Old Mexico. Old Mexico is a republic and New Mexico is a USA state. That fiesta happens in September along with the Albuquerque hot air balloon fiesta and Maria Benitez flamenco. And a rodeo and the Chama Toltec train trip into Colorado the aspens. Eat red chili enchiladas tacos drink beer & tequilla.YUM!
Cowboys don't wear them unless they are Vaqueros- That happens in Tucson Arizona at Fiesta Los Vaqueros. It could be said that the main virtue of the poncho is that it cannot fall off. So for that reason it makes sense to a horseman.
lazy artisans could make a fashion poncho from yarn in about a day. In that case it became a bunch of holes tied together with string! Some of the ponchos became lacey and very feminine. They looked very nice with the early Gunne Sax dresses. Tiered skirts made from cotton voile with narrow ribbon trim and ruffles were seen with lacey yarn ponchos at the prom and were great for chilly spring dates.
some people collected ponchos and loved them greatly. A poncho is a great oportunity to practice the craft of tassel makeing and pom pom makeing . You'll see the poncho neck hole haveing ties which end in pom poms.
A hat looks great with the poncho. The more handmade and ethnic it is the better.
A bandolero is nicely hiden by the poncho and I figure a weaponed up guy on horseback is likely to have plenty of ammo under his poncho.
As for the famous bandit his name was PANCHO--with an "A". I met his widow in Chihuahua back in the 1960's and she showed us his car full of bullet holes.
