Joan Elizabeth Miller Higginbotham is an American astronaut. She is currently in orbit as mission specialist 4 for mission STS-116 on Space Shuttle Discovery, which is her first Space Shuttle mission.

Higginbotham was born in Chicago, Illinois. She attended high school at Whitney Young Magnet High School in 1982. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from the Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1987. She also has a Masters of Management Science (1992) and Masters in Space Systems (1992) both from the Florida Institute of Technology.

She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

She started her career at the Kennedy Space Center in 1987 and has worked mainly as a payload specialist in the Space Shuttle program. She was accepted into the astronaut program in 1996 and is currently assigned to the crew of STS-116 which launched on December 9, 2006 aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery.
