The leaders over there know that the majority of Muslims hate Israel for the one sided information they get on the history of Israel and the Palestinian crisis.
So by threatening Israel they ingratiate themselves to the least informed and most easily manipulated of their people.

if you're asking why the Iranians don't' think Israel should exist, that's a complex and yet simple question.
I won't go into the complex, but the simple is that the US and UK relocated European Jews right after WWII to the area we know today as Isreal. The only trouble was that even though it was the traditional holy land, Jews hadn't occupied it for several thousand years. the Palestinians had moved in, and we came in and said, "sorry, you're just gonna have to move" And took away homes, lives, and destroyed communities forcing them to find a new home somewhere. they only had a few days to pack before the new inhabitants moved in.
Nobody in the middle east liked that, and Iran has been flexing it's muscles, and that's just one way they're gaining support. It's popular line that wins you the confidence of the people over there (other then the Jews)
the Iraninans aren't lunatics, least of all the president. He is however, dangerous not to world security, but the security of US interests. (they're on some of the richest oil deposits in the world, remember?)

It's the same rhetoric we've been hearing since Israel came back to the Middle East. Muslim nations want them exterminated and Israel survives despite the threats. Their nuclear weaponry, outstanding army, and support from the West on moral and military grounds is what has kept them from being destroyed. An Israel without nuclear weapons would cease to exist, but an Israel with nuclear weapons can survive.

Consider it one of many threats spoken out against Israel. Ahmadinejad believes he is well supported and that many countries would join efforts to eradicate the country of the Jews.
Read the news about the Holocaust conference and you get an idea about the current groove in the persian government

Cause Israel foolishly only leased the land from the Palastinians instead of buying it outright. Now it's worth a fortune and some one wants to build a shopping mall on it.

No. Nor do I understand why anyone thinks that solving problems involving Iran can be addressed through diplomacy. The Iranian president is a lunatic!
Heaven help us if they figure out how to get nuclear weapons. They'll doubtlessly start WWIII.

If it weren't true it would be funny, but Iran's President is insane and a demagogue. He'll say anything to look strong in the eyes of Muslims. So he threatens any country willing to call him on his BS.

It's the only democracy in the Middle East and Iran's leaders are afraid that the idea might just catch on.
