Check out where you want to live FIRST - and look at all the parts of your needs:
1. Climate - do you like desert, rain forest, hot and humid, snow for months?
2. Society - big city versus small town, need an international airport nearby?
3. Shopping - do you feel the need to be near the biggest mall in America, or do you internet shop?
4. Taxes - some states have income taxes, some states have sales taxes, some states have both.
5. Geography - do you need to be near mountains, oceans, rivers, lakes, flat space, etc?
AFTER you have a general idea of what you like and need, THEN start looking at locations. I can tell you after living across the country, the US has everything anyone is looking for, but you have to know what you want and go after it. Also, find where you want to live according to what you like and don't like, then stick with it - decide early on what you're willing to compromise on for career, family, etc. For example, I don't like big cities, but I married an engineer and the only firms that really need his kind of expertise are in big cities.
There are tons of websites on each state, and even most little towns have their own websites these days, so I would focus on general US information first, then get more specific - and go to places before you put them on your short list. Talk to people there, eat local food, do a little shopping and driving.

I really, really think the city I'm in is the best place to live in the USA. However, since there are people that are trying to get to the USA to do bad things here, I'm not going to tell you where it is until you tell us that you're a nice person coming here. Are you?
Oh yeah, ignore that thing I write down there about what kind of work I do.... I might commute, so that might not be the city I'm talking about.

People who live near the coast (any coast) are usually nicer than people who live in the middle of a large country.
Gulf Coast people are great!
East Coast people are pretty good too, but avoid DC and New Yorkers.
People in Alaska are some of the nicest I have ever met.
