Methylmercury is a metal that can be found in some fish. If you're pregnant or trying to become pregnant, don't eat swordfish, tilefish, king mackerel, and shark.

It's okay to eat other cooked fish/seafood as long as a variety of other kinds are selected during pregnancy or while a woman is trying to become pregnant. She can choose shellfish, canned fish, smaller ocean fish, or farm-raised fish. She can safely eat 12 ounces per week of a variety of cooked fish. A typical serving size of fish is from 3 to 6 ounces. Of course, if her serving sizes are smaller, she can eat fish more frequently
Shrimp is fine to eat!

Yes and No.

You don't want to overload on seafood that has significant amounts of mercury: Tuna, salmon, etc. Limit those types of fish to no more than one serving per week.

Shellfish should be limited only IF you have a history of shellfish allergies in your families. The same goes for peanut allergies!

I'm pregnant and I love shrimp at least 1x a week!

I had this same question! I took it straight to my doctor. He said that most seafood is good, but to stay away from those fish higher up on the food chain. Those fish contain more mercury, which is unhealthy for you and the baby (i.e. salmon, shark, swordfish, tuna.) He said it's okay to eat them in small doses, but not to have more than one serving a week. Other seafood is totally fine, including shrimp and shellfish.

Other doctors may say different things - I think it all depends on who your doctor is. My doctor is very laid back - in his words "You guys (meaning women) have been doing this for thousands, if not millions of years now. You don't really need my help, I'm just there to catch the baby if all goes well." :)

I am actually 11 weeks and 1 day pregnant myself. I was wondering the same thing after eatting a basket of popcorn shrimp and then a small shrimp cocktail. Someone had told me I was supposed to. I looked into it and read about it online, then I called my Dr. Some fish are okay, while others aren't. Stuff like Fish sticks and store bought processed stuff (the breaded stuff) are a big NO. The list below shows the amount of various types of fish that a woman who is pregnant or planning to become pregnant can safely eat, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. People with small children who want to use the list as a guide should reduce portion sizes. Adult men, and women who are not planning to become pregnant, are less at risk from mercury exposure but may wish to refer to the list for low-mercury choices. Protecting yourself -- Certain fish, even some that are low in mercury, make poor choices for other reasons, most often because they have been fished so extensively that their numbers are perilously low. You can eat shrimp as long as it's cooked!

The seafood restrictions are because of the high mercury content of large, long-lived fish, like shark, tilefish, and even tuna. Smaller fish like salmon and most shellfish except for lobster are fine.

I did.

You're not supposed to eat raw (sushi) or rare (tuna) and no deli meats or soft cheeses (brie). They may have listeria, its some nasty bacteria that is harmful to your fetus.

Once a food is cooked, listeria is killed. So unless you eat your shrimp raw, a few shrimp here and there will be fine.
