Does it serve any purpose, in your opinion or are its effects always negative? What's the best way to minimize its control over our lives without falling into the trap of appearing callous?

I've noticed that a lot of people seem to think that political correctness only pertains to discussions about race, but doesn't it have a much broader reach than that? Can you think of examples where political correctness has affected the public discourse not only about race relations but also about topics ranging from holiday greetings to the war in Iraq? What areas is political correctness most prevalent in?

More importantly, is there even an objective definition of "political correctness" that we can apply, or does pretty much everyone try to control the language and minimize the discourse of those who don't agree with us?

Political correctness is about putting pressure on other people to accept your point of view exclusively. Lots of people are guilty of political correctness; it's not just bureaucrats. The examples you gave about holiday greetings and the Iraqi war are good ones.

Whether you're telling people who protest the Iraqi war they're unpatriotic, or refusing to say "Merry Christmas" for fear of offending someone, or boycotting stores who don't say "Merry Christmas" to you when you shop for Christmas gifts throughout the month of December, it's political correctness.

People think political correctness is wrong until their special interest group is the one that gets insulted or shut out of the conversation; then they're the ones putting pressure on everybody else to use the wording they want. Like you said, it cuts both ways.

fantastic job! "Undocumented individuals?" Pahleeze!!! To Scenic element: you ought to inform your uninformed boss, that "Hispanic" is a time period that refers to ALL Latinos, it is fairly the computer note, "Hispanic" is very last 365 days's time period, and under no circumstances only to Mexicans. My husband is a Latino and HE became BORN an American in Puerto Rico! it truly is part of the concern with pc: human beings typically insist on it yet they fairly don't have any clue as to what they are speaking about so that they are incorrect, both pc and any opposite direction!

All political correctness is about is those cry babies who don’t think we should offend anyone?? WTF.. the fact of life is this. If you believe in ANYTHING.. I don’t care what it is. You have AUTOMATICALLY offended someone. Growing up as adults you are supposed to be able to deal with the fact that not everyone believes as you do. It is this cry baby society we live in and nothing to do with respect at all. when I grew up we learned to deal with life. Not cry until someone hands us a hanky and pats us on the back. grow up people. the only way you can NOT offend someone is to NOT believe in anything.
