I believe it has to do with the emergence of the science of paleontology and the scientific fact that human history began LONG before agriculture and civilization. History was separated into "History" (ie. recorded history of human civilization) and "Prehistory". I came across the websites below which offers some interesting information on The Great Forgetting.

Are you referring to the ancient belief pertaining to reincarnation that holds that after death and before rebirth, the soul drinks of a potion that induces forgetfulness of the experiences learned in the last life?

I know about the forgetting that happens each time before you incarnate into your next physical body if that's what you mean.
