It means that he can tell that the problem is hard for you to talk about, and he doesn't want to push you into it. He does care, and wants you to know he's there for you if/when you are ready to talk.

It means that they do not have a solution to the problem It shows frustration. They have heard the problem before (therefore, "you don't have to tell me" again). If they had a solution then they would give the solution. So the linguistic function of their answer is that they do not want to talk about it because whatever is brought up cannot lead to a solution. In the same situation, if the guy wants to discuss the problem his answer will be something like "Your're preachin' to the choir!" which means the two people agree, and he is enthusiastic about discussing solutions.

Woman: I want to tell you about my problem with ____________
Translation; I care about you. Because I care about you I want to share this with you, get your ideas, see if you agree, disagree, how you feel about it. I want to talk about how everyone involved feels about this. Maybe I should view it differently. What do you think?

Man: You don't have to tell me.
translation; I wish you wouldn't tell me even though I care about you because then we will have a two-hour discussion about feelings and stuff and you know I love you but GOD! it bores me to tears and "yes", "no", "i dunno" is the limits of my verbal capabilities when the conversation centers around emotions and feelings. Anyway, I wouldn't use guilt to force you into a 2-hour conversation about sports by saying "if you cared about me, you'd talk about sports with me".
Take me for what I am, just a man.

Don't hate me for this, just trying to help you the best way I know how.

When a guy sayd that "you dont have to tell them" it doesnt necessarily mean that they don't care. they might think that you don't want to talk about what is wrong or they might think you need time before you can talk about a certain problem that you are having.

Sometimes, sometimes they just want you to know that you don't have to talk about. But I'd say that he might feel incapable of helping you handle it or just doesn't want to hear it.

My boyfriend says that whenever we run into one of my ex's. I'll start to say something & He'll hold up his hand & say 'You don't have to tell me about it.' It's my clue that he doesn't want to know.

Well it depends on how they say it if they say with a bored attitude they don't give a rip about anything you have to say but if they say it with a hopful, anxious attitude it means they really wnat to know and care about what you have to offer. so it all depends on their expressions and reactions.

No it means they really want to know. It's reverse psychology, after they say that, you're suppost to tell them your problem.
