I remember when there were lots of favourite ads being shown. It was quite a shock though to see one today which made me laugh (a man fighting a bear for salmon; courtesy of John West). Don't you just hate, for instance, those pretentious and samey ads for perfume and aftershave that appear every Christmas? And there are plenty of other examples of bad ads around. Since ITV is going down the pan, maybe it should consider trying to encourage better ads to keep us interested in its channel (no you're right - it would never work). Any ads you especially love or hate?

You are so right, I find most of them utterly patronising. However! The Marks and Spencer food ads work, and what's the recent ones advertising the HD TV - coloured balls falling down hill in San Fran. and exploding coloured water around some (derelict?) flats. That's a good one. I like the O2 ads, as I think Sean Bean's voice is chocolatey.

There always has been bad ads, just as there always has been good ads. The point of an ad is to get people to remember the product and buy the next time they're in a shop that sells it. It doesn't matter whether an ad does this by being eye catching or being naff or cheesy.

We may tend to forget bad ads from years ago, but the truly awful stick in our minds: Shake 'n' Vac is one of the foremost examples.

These are some other ads I remember from years ago was the one where a girl was going to be a proper little madam when she grew up - according to her mother. And the Martian Smash ads. And the Chimpee tea ads. They were all good.

Compare those ads and any other you can remember with these: Honda Power of Dreams (the full version of the car parts one particularly where car parts imaginitvely knock into each other to get a Honda car to move down a ramp), The Guinness ads, The Love Your Bum ads and that newspaper ad where you are encouraged to look at things in different ways (Where a young man looks as though he's about to attack a woman, but in the end he's saving her from being run over)

Personally, I think the overall quallity of teh ads has probably imroved, but there is still a place for the ads you (and all of of us) complain about.

The perfume ads are all too arsey - the best ad was the Carling Black Label ads, particularly the Dambusters one with the German in goal trying to 'save' the bouncing bombs - funniest ad ever. At the moment i like the Radio 2 ad with Elvis. I hate the toilet ads, why do we need to see a kid sat on the loo, looking for toilet roll to wipe his a*se or puffing air freshener to get rid of the smell - totally unnecessary.

Yeah, I agree. Some commercials are on all the time, but others are on rarely. Some commercials, like MADD, are decades old. I only like the funny commercials.

The commercials also depend on which channel you're watching. I like TBS' commercials the most.
