Fran is a 68 yr old woman who has been brought to Oakwood hospital by her husband. She has severe back pain after a fall in the living room. The husband is confused by the severity of Fran's pain since he observed the fall. He explains to the doctor that she fell on the carpet in the living room upon getting up from a chair. Fran's pain is centered in the thoracic area and X-ray studies show fractures at T10- T12. The X-ray also shows decreased bone density in all the vertebraes -cervical thru lumbar. through further examination the doctor observes that Fran is bow-legged and the joints are very swollen. Blood works shows much osteoblast activity within the bone.

Fran may have degenerative disc disease with osteoarthritis, but compression fractures will have increased pain no matter how she fell. This allows the vertebrae to move and as anyone knows fractures hurt when mobilized ,so now you have bone moving against bone and this pain can last until the vertebrae are healed.
The osteoblast activity in the blood work needs to be explored further with more blood test and a hematologist for a second opinion.
