Ive heard that using rainwater is best, but does tapwater really do any damage? Could boiled-then-cooled tapwater be used as a substitute?

Tapwater is usually ok (if you don't drink it, don't give it to your plants!). Too much chlorine, fluoride, or water softeners in your tap water can kill some plants - even easy ones such as spider plants. Very hard water can also cause problems due to excess metals. Distilled water + fertilizer is the best. Rainwater is often good, as long as the pH isn't too low or you're not immediately downwind of a smokestack. Boiling doesn't help, in fact it often makes your tap water worse for plants. If you can't recondense the steam... that'd be great (=distilled). If you have a dehumidifier, use the water from that. Try your tap water (if you drink it!), it is the easiest after all. Just keep an eye on the plants and see how they react after a couple of weeks.

Tap water does no real harm. Rainwater is generally softer. More important to stand in a dish and water from the bottom.Cant over-water that way.

Rainwater has more nutrients in it. Boiled water kills off all of the nutrients. Tap water is better .

there is no problem, water it anyway. Though rain water is the best, tap water is ok. the problem is not the water but how much. i know of many people who have killed plants by overwatering so see that you water judiciously once and see that the water is that the water is drained out of the pot. you dont have to water daily. observe the soil see that it should remain moist not wet and then determine the frequency of watering.

Taps not going to hurt but I like to spoil my house plants with distilled water. Also, dont forget to put it in the sun.
