I have an 87 Olds Cutlass Cierra, I have replaced the starter, and alternater. I was just wondering when I start my car my revs are all over the place. They jump from almost 2000 and then drop to 800 when it gets that low my car stalls. I really don't want to have to 2 foot drive my car. Someone said it was my O2 or knock sensor. Some ppl say they don't even think that cars have knock sensors. So I am really confused.

The idle on your car is controlled by the IAC (idle air control motor). It could be malfunctioning, or it could be a vaccum leak causing the same effect.

The Idle Air Control Motor controls your idle> By replacing your starter you unhooked the battery erasing the idle strategy your car. You may get lucky go for a road test trying to get to a highway drive it hard wide open throttle for a couple of seconds. Then drive normal . This can sometime relearn the idle .If this does not work you will need to go to a repair shop to have it done by a scanner.

A car of the age you describe would not have knock sensors .The most likely problem is a sticking throttle cable or a vacuum pipe split or displaced when you replaced your starter etc.Hope this helps Regards MIck UK

On modern cars it is the idle air control valve, but on this old of a car that could still have a carburetor it would be the idle stop solenoid that needs to be adjusted, assuming you have a carburetored fuel system.

Sounds like IACV, or a vaccum leak.
