http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_(colour)

Apparently:

The colour is named after the orange fruit. Before this was introduced to the English-speaking world, the colour was referred to (in Old English) as geoluhread, which translates into Modern English variously as yellow-red, yellowred, or yellored (all pronounced the same).

Not really a question but more of a useless bit of trivia to settle the question asked earlier! x

Well, "orange" comes from Arabic naranj, similar to the late Latin words aranginia, aurantia and narancum, and thence into English via French - all based on the colour of the fruit. You say yellow-red if you want, Lilstar, but I'll say orange - much more pithy, if you'll forgive the pun.

Now, if you're into colourful Old and Middle English, did you know that until "purple" came into common English use from Northumbria, "brown" was used for both those colours? No doubt the North-Easterners wanted to let everyone know that, if the colour was a bit poncey, it definitely wasn't genuine Newcastle Brown in the glass....
