The company I work for is having a gingerbread house decorating contest...The prize is a donation to the charity of the winning team's choice.

Prizes will be awarded for: Best Overall Gingerbread House, Most Creative Gingerbread House, Best Use Of Materials, House You'd Most Like To Live In, and House Most Likely To Be Condemned.

I need ideas on a theme for the house...What would be fun and different?

Okay, so we have decided on a "savory" house...All of the edible items will be savory, instead of sweet.

The roof will be covered in salami "tiles", and we'll make lamp posts from breadsticks and olives.

Any other suggestions?

Also, if anyone has done something like this, what problems will we run into with "wet" items sticking in the royal icing?

ok this is a great idea! you are sure to win the house most likely to be condemed if you actually try to make your gingerbread house look like a white trash home.. like make the door look rotted... really take some time intot he details... have the grass outside be really tall.... make the roof shingles really old and turned up looking... make the window broke or cracked...and go from there.. you know what i mean.. i think that would just be absolutly a unique and wonderful idea.. good luck

Can you make it related to your work or charity? Paste your logo in a window or sign plate made of candy cane sticks

BTW If you are not a typical gingerbread house maker ,an iciing made just eggwhites and sugar holds quite well. I'd say about 1 egg white to 1 1/2 cups sugar - vary to get the consistency you like.

Or better yet choose habitat for humanity and then go for the Most Likely To Be Condemned.

That is the Best Idea! If you've moved out, you know the way pricey it's to get all the ones little necessities. They will love you for it. (And don't forget, something they purchase themselve, they are going to commonly simplest purchase the "must have's" in view that they commonly would possibly not be competent to get all that they desire or want - so purchase some of the "chocolates" that are not always the "need to have's" - an instance is: they must have the salt & pepper, however might like to have the cinnamon or bacon bits or anything like that, or they must have the dishsoap, however might like to have one of the most little white magic sponges - you get the notion, proper.) You too can make it alot extra amusing through tieing the units at the side of yarn, string, something - the highest object can be tied to the others and so they simply pull them out of the filling - peanuts, paper, something works.

Make a castle with a blue jello moat and everything. It could be the castle from the island of misfit toys from Rudolph.
