Well, I don't take "brain drugs" for my anxiety, because that is letting your anxiety control you. I let it control me sometimes for fun, but when it's time to go out and make things happen, then I (of all people) should be able to put my anxiety back to bed.
(If you can't even control your own brain, then what are you doing here?)

I think some people can control their anxiety but it depends on the severity of it. Some people need medicine and therapy because they have some major imbalances in their brain while others can just push past it without much difficulty.

There are certain chemicals lacking in persons that cause anxiety attacks and they lack the means to control anxiety, that is why there is medication.

some people know how to mentally work out the causes of the anxiety and not have any, or suppress it to a tolerable level...while others know of anti anxiety pills that they can get that will do the job for them so they dont have to bother with the mental acrobatics, and the benzodiazepine class of drugs which is most often prescribed for anxiety are very cheap for a months supply. the only thing is there are some studies showing longterm brain damage although its not "officially" confirmed i dont believe, but it is officially confirmed that they are all addictive, particularly the popular, powerful "king" benzo xanax. they are quickly and powerfully addictive, and it is possible to die from withdrawals if your dosage and duration of treatment was high enough and you quit cold turkey.
yet other people become alcoholics because they dont have to mess with doctors appointments, explaining the little bit your required to to the doctor of what symptoms you experience when your anxiety hits you, what your opinion of its cause is, etc, and they dont want to mess with filling prescriptions or have the belief alcohol is safer than "those pills from the crazy doc".
i dont believe most of us lack the actual means to control our anxiety, but some of us choose not to deal with it for whatever reason be it emotional, laziness, quick-fix personality, or whatever.

If you are having this much anxiety about it, then maybe you aren't ready for it. If things were right between you and the person you were considering having sex with, you may be a little nervous, but that person would be able to calm you. I say you are either not ready or the person is not right.

Conventional prescription medication tends to address the symptoms rather than the cause. There are natural neurotransmitter chemical replacements that you can buy from health food stores and vitamin stores. I take:
SAMe
5-HTP
L-Tyrosine
These have prevented panic attacks for me for the last 5 years.
There are other things you can do to keep from building up stress that are loosely based on "The Serenity Prayer". It's basically sorting out the things that are worth worrying about and letting the rest go.

Both. It depends on the person. For me, there are days I feel anxious and can't control it, other times I can.
