We have 2 holes that are a little bigger than a quater that have been made by some type of insect/pest. The whole is located outside on a large wooden gable that juts out over our front door. Any ideas or suggestions on how to get rid of said pest?

They are carpenter bees. They usually won't sting unless you really mess with them. They are solitary--one bee per hole, but they like to be in communities so you want to take care of them before more "move into" the gable. You can puff a little Sevin dust into the hole to kill them and then a week later get some plastic wood to fill the holes. Let them dry then paint over it and your problem should be over.

They sell a kit at the home improvement stores. One is a foam that you shoot into the hole and the other is steaks that you pound into the ground. The steaks have an indicator to tell you if you have termites and also protect your home for a year. Otherwise depending on the size of your house, you could be looking at $2500-3,000 to tent. Most termite pest control companies will, however, come out to your house and provide a free inspection. They will tell you if and where you have termites. That being said, you could also have a woodpecker! Whenever I've seen termite holes they are tiny and the size you describe sounds a little large.

OMG we had them BAD and we didn't know it until I noticed the winged ones. After that I started looking for little mud tube trails along walls and floor boards and beams, indoors and out, and little holes that look like mud rivets or little tubes in the ceiling.

Also, take a very narrow but long drill bit and buzz a few spots here and there on beams. If you find any voids, call the pros.

Plus these things smell almost like maggots and the queens make weird clicking noises in the walls when you get too close to them.

ANY doubt just get the pros involved. We lost one house completely before we knew we had them. Cave in's are not fun.

That is too large of a hole for termites. If you find little pyramids of fine sawdust anywhere in you house. It is probably termites. Windowsills especially.
