Your "router" is essentially an "internet splitter" that allows multiple people to use your internet connection.

How you connect it:

(Internet) -> Your Modem -> Your Router -> Your Computer(s)

Finally, routers are usually left on because the total power they consume per-year is probably around ~$10/year
Many people use a surge protector to just shut electronic equipment off when it is not being used.

I am assuming you have a DSL or Cable Modem. You will need to keep the modem and plug it into the new Router instead of your computer.
A router will allow more then one computer to connect to the one connection you get from your ISP. It will give it local IP addresses so they will not be available to the rest of the world.
Yes, it will always stay on. I would advise you set up some secureity or a password on it. It should have instructions in the manual on how to do this.

Routers get you "networked". You can have several wired and wireless computers, plus you can share resources (printers, file sharing, once you've configured the computers for it!)- this without you needed to pay (your provider) for each additional computer that will be accessing the internet.

Routers normally have ethernet ports. Your modem should be connected to the port where it says "Internet" or WAN.

The router does normally stay on, along with your broadband router. Actually, if its turned of for a long period of time (usually more than 6 to 12 hrs) - it sometimes goes back to factory default.

Oh, routers are made for broadband connection. Regular modems can work with it, but only on the LAN (one of the 4 ports at the back of the router) side, and you'll have to enable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing).

Of course, you'll need to configure the router accordingly. And for gaming, you may need to forward ports (depending on which online game).

Not sure if you have an external modem or the internal that came in the computer, but the router will plug in to your phone jack and main computer. The router will allow you to use other computers such as laptops throughout your house without having to be wired to an outlet.
