It’s quite simple. During the test they will ask control questions (what is your name, age, etc.). During this phase do something to stress your system like bite your cheek, or put a push pin in you shoes and poke yourself during this phase.
This will crate a higher baseline and allow you to lie your @ss off.

Generator Gator is kinda right. I have taken a test like this in the past and have also cheated it. There is always two sets of questions. Before the detector is on and then during. The questions are basically the same yet they ask you if you have left any infomration off the 1st answer.
If you really don't care about the fact that you lied, ie drug use then your heart rate and blood pressure will remain calm.
Also, put the question out of your mind immediately after you answer and focus on something in the room. I did this by reading a serial # off of a safe in the room repeatedly until they moved onto the next question.
A regular trick of the polygrapher is to show you a card trick before they start which proves that the machine cannot be beaten. This is the oldest trick in the book, and is only done to scare you.
They can be beat and quite easily, this is why they are NOT admissible forms of evidence in court proceedings.

Yes, but it takes a special person or mindset to do it.
The body has certain reactions when it knowingly tells a falsehood and is anxious about being caught. Heart rate, perspiration rates, etc. all change.
Some people are just anxious about the test itself, so lie detector administrators try to work around this by asking "comfortable" questions first.... "what's your name", "where did you grow up", etc.
These serve as a baseline for the more critical questions later.
If you believe what you're saying, or can act totally detached when answering, you can fool it.
I'm reminded of a Barney Miller episode (old police TV series) where Detective Dietrich was one of the ones in the station that had to take a lie detector test and wanted to prove you could fool them and when asked where he was born he said with a straight face "in a galaxy far, far away", and so forth and never once set off the lie detector. It was a comedy, and not real, of course, but it shows what you can do.

Yeah it can be done. its been done before also. I think now that's why they make people take their shoes off. Don't do it though your foot might bleed. You put a thumb tack in your shoe and make sure it can poke at your big toe. Well anyways every time a question is asked to you, put pressure against the thumb tack and answer the question simultaneously. The test will detect it and think its a normal thinking habit instead of being nervous or a lie

Yes there is, but you have to be really good at dismissing questions asked of you and you ask yourself your own questions in your head. You answer out loud your own question and not their question. Not many people can do it, but it can be done.
