I found this stray cat last week that i plan on keeping.I brought him to the vet and had all his shots done and had him wormed. The problem is for the last 2 days he has had diarrhea and has had a few accidents around the house. He has a litter box and uses it for the most part but sometimes he acts like he wants to go out to go to the bathroom. When he does this and i don't let him out he has a accident on the floor. It's like he forgets how to use the litter box.He mostly has pee accidents but has pooped in the house too becuase he could not get out.Why would he do this? I clean his litter box everyday to keep it clean.

Definitely talk to your vet because there might be something wrong that normal tests wouldn't necessarily detect (or it's something new). Keep in mind also that cats are creatures of habit - big time!! Even the slightest change can be overly traumatic to a cat (mine don't care for me moving their food to a different location). You've gotten some really good answers so far (not that I'm an expert except by experience with pets and cats all my life). I would only add that you really need to decide first whether your cat is an indoor/outdoor or a strictly indoor cat. I've adopted 2 strays and made them strictly indoor cats. I didn't have to "force" (for lack of a better term) the issue of them using the litter box, but in order to keep your cat an indoor cat, I wouldn't give him the option of going outside, even if it's just to train him to use the litter box. That's because of the whole creatues of habit thing - don't make it any more difficult than it already is. The 1st stray I adopted asked to go outside until I showed him the litter box, then he never asked again (but he loved being an indoor cat too, so...) If you want to make your cat strictly indoors, and his problem is not medical/medicine related, I'd "force" it by either taking him to the box whenever he asks, or the answer about putting a litter box next to the door and SLOWLY moving it every few days or so. Cats are very intelligent and it won't take long for him to get it. And even if he doesn't like it as much as going outside, he will adapt. But decide if yours is an indoor or an indoor/outdoor cat first.

Also, don't forget to regularly clean the litter box regardless of the type of litter you use. Cats don't generally like to use messy places and I've known cats to go in the house if the box is dirty. He may be asking to go outside because he doesn't like the condition of the box.

This cat could be one of two things: He could have had an owner at one time who potty trained him to go outside, like a dog. He also could have some illness the vet did not check for, urinary tract problems (cats are especially susceptible to urinary and kidney infections).
After you call the vet to make sure he's not ill, there is a special litter called cat attract. I believe you can buy it at petsmart. This may attract him to the litter box when he doesn't want to use it. Also consider getting another litter box across the house. I know it sounds goofy, but cats are very particular. one of my cats wouldn't use the litter box, then I got one downstairs, and she used it all the time! Cats are very finicky, he may also just be mad he can't go out, and this is his way of "teaching you a lesson"

I agree with the previous answer about the diarrhea, all the meds, a new environment, and a change in foods. Maybe try another cat box by the door that he asks to go out and just put him in there when he wants to go out, if that works then you can eventually move that box closer and closer to the other one and eventually get back to just one. Even a small cardboard box (like a soda tray) with just a little bit of little would probably work, nothing major. Good luck!

It sounds like he is still adjusting to his new enviroment. Also, this has happened to my mom and me with the messing everywhere. My mom found the problem in the food. Some foods are not good for some cats digestive systems. We started using this new type of food, and no more runs or messes! I can't remember what it is called because when my mom or I refer to it, we call it "the evo food". It is a little pricey because it is the best that you can get. Try it because it really works! Good luck with everything!

i suggest that u put the litter box outside and take the cat outside and let him use the litter box outside until he gets used to the box. if u dont want your cat to go outside then i suggest that u take the cat to the litter box every 2 hrs. thats all i can think of i hope this works.

His stomach might need some time to adjust. I'm guessing you are feeding him some kind of cat food, and untill last week, he has been eating whatever. If you notice him wanting out, let him out for a while. When I let my cats out, I usually don't feed them first. Then when I want them to come in, I shake the food bag and they come rinning. Hope this helps.

Give it some time, it's in a brand new environment, prolly freaking out. Now it has all tis medicine in it, that's probably what's making it's diarrhea.

Just show it some love and be patient.
