I really would like to know why some are gold and some are silver, A friend of mine told me gold ones were faster, but another friend said it made no difference at all. I just want to see which one of them is right.

The USB cables that are silver are just a chrome or zinc plated copper contact. The gold colored cables are the copper contact cables that are gold plated. The gold plating provides a better contact surface at the computer and at the printer. However, the link between (the cable itself) is copper, so essentially the cables are the same.

Actually the plating on the gold are better conductors and static resistence than the silver, if it is specified.
