The Iliad covers a 10 day period near to the end of the Trojan War.
The Odyssey tells more details about the whole war, though it mainly covers Odysseus' travels as he returns from the war.
p.s. Vergil wrote the Aeneid, not the Iliad... the Aeneid tells of Aeneas' travels after he fled Troy, ending up in Italy and founding the... well, foundations... of the Roman empire.

Iliad.
He only tells the story of a period of about 10 days in the 10-year war, however. Not the whole story. The Iliad begins with Achilles' argument with Agamemnon over the captured princess Briseis, and it ends with the return of Hector's body to his father, Priam. In between you get lots of Achilles sulking, the death of Patroclus, and the death of Hector.
Many other episodes of the war are told, however, in conversations ... but by no means the entire story.

Homer's depiction of the Trojan war itself was in the "Illiad". It was followed up by his poem "Odessey". Other good bits for reading around it would be Aeyschelus' play: "Agammemnon"
