I have this same situation. We found some traps at a feed store that are a box with a hole cut out that only the mouse or rat can get in. Then there are some chambers inside so that you can put poison or a trap and no of it can get out of the container. We used it out in our barn where we have rabbits, chickens, dogs and cats and all of my animals were safe and sound but it really took care of the rat problem.

Glue traps work pretty well. My dogs only stepped in them a few times!
We eventually had to get some poison because I swear the mice were jumping over the glue traps. We just made sure the poison was somewhere that the dogs couldn't get it. If you use the poison, just be really careful.

You could try teaching your cats to catch the mice!

If you are concerned for your pets, then I would go to your local hardware store and get some traps. If you do not want to kill the little critters, then they have "Live-Traps", which flip them into a storage area and you can take and release them somewhere else. A good general idea is to get rid of the things that attract them, like pet foods or pantry items. Pet foods store well in lidded and locked garbage cans, and many pantry items store well in glass/plastic containers, even 5 gallon buckets with lids. If there is nothing for them to eat, they will go away. If you just want to kill them, well, you can always leave out alka-seltzer tabs, just make sure your pets cannot get to them!!!!!

Live traps are definitely your best bet! But one word of advice: Check them every day, and consider putting what you catch into a large aquarium of sorts so you can get the whole family. (you know there's families in there!) When you empty them from your house, do not just take them outside, take them to a field somewhere from civilization or they will just come right back in!! killing them is not the answer!

my cats are so well fed that they wouldn't care if a mouse slept next to them. my dogs kill the rats outside, and for the inside i put the old fashion traps down with a small piece of cheese. works great!

your cat should take care of that problem, since you have animals, poison shouldn't be used.....If they are outside pets, you can use glue traps, put them where you think the rodents are, and along the baseboards, that is how they travel, by their scent. Then throw the glue trap w/mouse on it in the woods if you have some, and let nature take its course on the food chain....Unless you prefer snapping its neck in one of those metal wooden kinds....
